Easy Football Party Cookies

Football Sundays are huge in our house! We always watch the Carolina Panthers games, and we love to have friends over to join in on the fun. It’s also an excuse to treat myself to all the good snacks, including these cute cookies.

I’ve made these famous football cookies more times than I can count. I’ve brought them to several Super Bowl parties and college football tailgates, and they are always a huge hit. It looks like you put so much work into them, but they’re actually so easy and quick to make. My favorite thing about them is they only have 6 ingredients, and you probably already have most of them in your kitchen.

I originally got this recipe from my mom, who has been using it for years. She would use this to make the reindeer cookies with pretzel antlers for Christmas. My family loves these cookies so much that I adapted it to work all football season long!

As a final note, I used a cookie cutter to get the shape perfect, but you definitely don’t need it. For years, I made these without one and just freehanded it or used a knife to cut the dough into the right shape. If you are, however, in the market for some wonderful cookie cutters, I got a super affordable set of 101 from Amazon that includes a few football shapes along with letters and themed ones for every holiday. Such a bargain!

Football Cookies Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 egg yolk
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract (can also substitute with vanilla extract)
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • White icing for decorating

Directions

Pre-heat oven to 375 degrees. Soften butter in large mixing bowl. Combine butter, sugar, egg yolk and almond extract. Gradually add in flour and cocoa, and mix thoroughly. Shape into 2-3 inch footballs (using a cookie cutter if you have one). Bake for 7-9 minutes. Once they’re cool, decorate with white icing to create football laces. Makes about 2 dozen.
